Do you think that "Free Download" means that the program you get doesn't/won't cost you any money? Not so. Usually you are offered a demo of a program. But if that demo is only good for X days then when the demo period expires you either buy the program or it will no longer function.
One of my pet peeves is that a demo is usually only good for 15 or 30 days. Once you start using the demo the day counter starts running.
Few people have time to spend time every consecutive day to try a program. I think a better way would be to offer X number of USES.
